Getting Over Morphine Addiction?

Question by Sinomi: Getting over morphine addiction?
Hi, I have been prescribed morphine time release pills (60 mg) 2 times a day for my leg, as I was in an accident a year ago and it still gives me pain occasionally when the weather is bad and when I put too much stress on it.

However I do know I am addicted, and It didnt bother me honestly since I never questioned it, and never wanted to think of not being dependant on it.
However I recently met a man who has changed my life in many ways. we have been dating for almost 6 months and I honestly think hes the one for me (not getting into a different topic but, he makes me feel i want to better myself)
I visit him as he lives in a different state but the biggest thing keeping me from seeing him for long periods is a very stupid reason. my medication.
I am scared of being without it as I go through withdrawals, but yet I do want to get over my addiction, I hate having him see me this way, even though I do have pain i feel bad i’m always out of it because of that, or worrying i’ll run out and have to go back home. its beginning to strain us and I dont want to lose him.

I take my medication as prescribed and dont over dose myself, nor do I take them any way I shouldnt (crushing them etc)
I just know I feel awful when I try to stop taking them, but I really want to get off them so i dont have to rely or depend on them anymore, but I always fail. im at my wits end, and I feel so depressed and anxious because I dont know what to do, or try.

if your doctor wont help you,it is best to do it slowly by cutting down by half a tablet every 2 or 3 days,no more than that, after a few months you should be there, good luck and you have to want to do it

I am sorry to hear that you have become addicted to a prescibed drug initially taken for an injury.I practice in the UK so there is probably a difference in drugs used and protocols.
Consider the following-based on my UK experience. You say that you now wish to stop using-you have a reason to this is important as it gives you motivation.
Discuss 1 the possibility of admission for medical withdrawal
2 gradual reduction of dosage switich to a lower dose of the SR product
3 Change to Subutex buprenorphine it a short acting sublingual preparation used in Europe for reductionof heroin/morphine use-becoming increasingly popular in my experience(lot of information available on web)
4 Methadone substitution used a liquid can be prescibed in UK do not know about USA- .Have doubts about it from what you say as similar profile to morphine
5 Naloxone-used in opiate overdose-use will cause withdrawal symptoms

Have you considered going to NA?Usually a lot of experience/help there.

Again all my advice is general as I do not know you-but my favourite would be inpatient detoxification-or if not feasable subutex.

It is important that your treatment is managed by your doctor-just a few general observations and lines of thinking. Good luck.
