well, they aren’t pleasant. it usually involves replacing the heroin with methadone. then weaning off the methadone. they do this because heroin is a physical addiction, and if you try to stop it, the withdrawals can be fatal. Methadone is less addicting and easier to taper off of. The following site explains it all pretty well.

heroin detox can not be fatal, and methadone is a much more addictive drug than heroin. heroin withdrawal is like having a bad bout of flu, after a week you should feel better, whilst methadone takes months to leave your system. your sleeping pattern will be disturbed for a good few weeks after a heroin detox, but the key to a successful heroin withdrawal are more physiological than physical.there has been a great many myths about heroin withdrawal,and the treatment of a much more addictive opiate is misguided. all you really need is a little time, and a lot of support from friends(who don’t use drugs) and family, if you have any.
there is a whole industry set up to deal with addiction these days, but in my experience its a con!
