What to Expect From Methadone Withdrawal?

Question by kyleroyal: What to expect from Methadone withdrawal?
A little background on myself. I am 23 years old, 5’10 and 130lbs, currently exercising well and eating healthy, taking supplements etc. I have been a heroin addict for about a year or two, when I lived up in Ohio. I ended up moving back home to the south in April and admitted myself into a Methadone clinic as of 04/30/2013. Its really put a dent in my wallet, spending about 200 every two weeks for the clinic and thats half of my checks. Now heres the thing, I CANT AFFORD THIS ANYMORE and I am soooo ready to be completely clean off of drugs. I started on about 30mg of Methadone and dosed up to about 65mg as of today, 07/31/2013. I am so sick of being tired all the time, Im taking about a nap or two a day and sleeping a ton. Though the Methadone has helped me tremendously (able to hold a job, relationship etc) I have to get off of it. The clinic I’m going to weans you down over a 2 week span if you can no longer pay. So I’m looking at a rapid weaning from 65mg that ive been on for about 3-4 months. I am VERY VERY SCARED of withdrawal. I used to get dopesick every day before I got my shot of heroin, but I do know that heroin withdrawal only lasts a week at the most, and Methadone withdrawal lasts months. What can I expect in terms of withdrawal, from being on 65mg for 3-4 months? Can anyone give me some sort of advice? Again I started on 30mg on 04/30/2013 and dosed up to 65mg as of today. Help?

I also kicked Klonopin from being on 1mg for 6 or so months, (I have terrible panic attacks, and still do every single day at least once, but I have been learning to deal with it, and the exercising has actually helped in decreasing the intensity of the attacks, currently 2 months clean from benzos :)).

While I have never undergone opiate withdrawal personally, I understand your fears as I have had several friends undergo the withdrawal process, both from prescription pain pills and methadone. They have described the process to me and it sounds very frightening.

I don’t know what your insurance situation is, but have you considered rapid detox? There are detox centers all over the country…I think Florida has a bunch of them, that can help you get off the meds quickly and with minimal discomfort. This might be your best option.
