It alters the way people feel. Even though the change in feeling is temporary and its consequences can be quite severe, some people cannot resist the temptation to find the quickest and easiest way to feel better.

Because many Americans have more dollars than sense and they abuse themselves regardless of the consequences. Not to mention Hollywood makes it look so appealing that weak minded people fall for the hype and end up destroying themselves in the process.
